Chateau de Santenay is one of Burgundy's largest wine estates. The majestic castle dates from the 9th century and was owned by Philippe le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy, for a period of time in the 14th century. He issued the edict that established monocepage viticulture in Burgundy, resulting in the substitution of Pinot Noir for Gamay. Chateau de Santenay owns 90 hectares of vineyards, spread over the Cote d'Or and the Cote Chalonnaise. In total, they make wine in 14 appellations, including Mercurey, Aloxe-Corton, Santenay, Pommard, and Saint-Aubin. Since 2004, the château has been Terra Vitis certified.
In the glass, the Santenay Bourgogne Chardonnay vieilles vignes has a bright, straw-yellow color with a rich, expressive nose with notes of white blossom, citrus, and a light woody touch. The attack is lively, with a pleasant acidity, the taste balanced, subtle, and elegant. A very pleasant, elegant, and handsome glass of wine coming from old vines (vieilles vignes) where 50% is fermented and aged in French oak barriques.
