Chateau Lynch-Bages is a fifth growth in the 1855 Bordeaux classification, but regularly sells for prices akin to second growths. There are a number of reasons for this ... a long history of exceptional quality, a reliable wine, ownership which at one time included an Englishman, resulting in good distribution in the UK for many years and an early entry into the Asian market. All of these facts combine to create strong demand for this wine, resulting in healthy prices. However, there are many wines which sell for as high or higher prices which are not nearly as reliable, so you can rest assured with Lynch-Bages, you will get what you're paying for.
The deep ruby 2010 Lynch-Bages has aromas of plums, blackberries, cherries and cedar, but is ultimately a very dark, austere red at the moment with amazing density and concentration and thick tannins. While these tannins are currently overwhelming, there is enough freshness there with hints of lively fruit and acidity that it will likely open up in about 5-8 years time. This is a classy, serious Lynch-Bages.
