Merryvale Cabernet Sauvignon "Calistoga" 2015

General Information

Merryvale's proprietors, the Schlatter Family, are winemaking traditionalists with a deep respect for Napa's winemaking legacy and a dynamic vision for the future of Napa Valley. They are committed to protecting and preserving the Napa Valley for future generations using sustainable practices.

Rene Schlatter Says ... “I enjoy drinking wines from all over the world, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Tuscany, Switzerland and Napa Valley. No matter what the origin I look for purity of fruit, personality, character and a sense of place. For a wine to be great it must stand the test of time.”

Merryvale’s 2015 Calistoga Cabernet is sourced from the same two vineyards as previous vintages but this bottling is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon (Amoenos) and 14% Petit Verdot (Kenefick). The grapes were handpicked and allowed to cold soak for five days after arrival at the winery, resulting in a long and gentle extraction. Native fermentation reached a peak temperature of 90°F as the wines were pumped over several times daily until dry and then pressed and drained to barrels where malolactic fermentation occurred. They aged the wine for 22 months in 70% new French oak barrels from the center of France. This wine was bottled without fining or filtration.

In 2015, they harvested this fruit in late September, utilizing each vineyard site to create this wine that showcases the best characteristics from this AVA. Equally represented, Kenefick brings ripe, spicy characters whereas Amoenos is full, dense and has loads of floral and red fruit notes. The lengthy finish displays well-proportioned tannins that will gain even more complexity as time passes. With proper cellaring, this wine will drink beautifully for the next 15 to 20 years.
