The Pira were an ancient family of winemakers, mentioned in the parish registers since the seventeenth century, who also became winemakers between the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. Gigi Pira, legendary exponent of the old school of production, created his wines by blending grapes from his own plots of Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Via Nuova. He argued that, just as cows must graze in the best pastures to produce excellent milk, only the best vineyards should be chosen for wine. But Pira's attachment to tradition did not stop there: he was in fact the last remaining winemaker to carry out the pressing on foot and the production without the support of any technical means. Since 1980, continuity has been guaranteed by Chiara Boschis and her parents Franco and Ida, already linked to the Pira family by deep friendship and mutual esteem and representing a historic family of Barolo producers from the 1700s, now in its 9th generation. After graduation, Chiara began to follow her passion for wine and her world full time, becoming one of the first female producers of Barolo from the end of the 1980s. Taking care of this "little big house" has brought a breath of renewal to the cellar and in the production style.
Via Nuova was the name of a small vineyard located close to the inhabited centre of Barolo. Its name derives from the proximity to the road (new, in the last century) that connected Barolo to Novello. Of that road today there remains only a path in the middle of the vineyards, which can be covered on foot. For years it was vinified in purity until the Municipality of Barolo, by reorganizing the Additional Geographical Mentions (which came into force in 2010), decided to incorporate it into a larger sub-area, distinguished by the name Terlo. With the abolition of this very small Cru, in homage to the tradition of blending, E Pira & Figli began to vinify the Barolo Via Nuova with the grapes of Terlo and Liste, from the Municipality of Barolo; Gabutti and Baudana of the Municipality of Serralunga d'Alba; Ravera di Monforte and Mosconi from the Municipality of Monforte d'Alba.

The 2014 Barolo Via Nuova is a blend of six sites, Liste Terlo Ravera di Monforte Mosconi Gabutti and Baudana, all of which are bottled as vineyard designates by other growers. There is something about the art of the blend that can be convincing especially in challenging vintages such as 2014. The Via Nuova is a veritable explosion of aromas flavours and sensations. Super-ripe red cherry plum kirsch cinnamon and lavender all rush from the glass. Sweet perfumed and beautifully layered throughout the 2014 Via Nuova is all finesse.

Round and solidly built, offering plum, cherry, earth and graphite flavours. The lively acidity and well-groomed tannins lend finesse. Finishes with a mix of fruit, earth and mineral elements. Best from 2021 through 2042.
