Tequila and smoke have a long historical association. Indeed, for most of its history, tequila has been notably smoky. Don Julio’s latest release, is an aged tequila that has been matured for approximately eight months in ex-bourbon barrels and then finished for two weeks in barrels that previously held Scotch whisky from Islay’s famed Lagavulin distillery. Islay is well known for its smoky, phenolic whiskies, and Lagavulin makes one of the most phenolic, smoky whiskies on the island.
The colour is an almost clear, very light lemon yellow. On the nose, it is sweet, with the fruity aromas typical of Highland grown agave piñas and elements of caramel and dried orange zest. There are additional notes of cinnamon spice and a bit of pepper.
