Canada is an infant in the global context of wine, and young regions cannot be blamed for mimicking their older brothers in their infancy, but at some point some intuitive winemaker has to throw out the recipe book and try responding to the fruit as it is, as it has emerged from that specific place on Earth. Only this way can that region begin creating wines that can only have come from where they were grown because they were vinified responsively, intuiting their direction.
This is why this Pinot Gris excites us. It speaks uniquely to this variety in this odd and wonderful little pocket of Vancouver Island. It shows that rare virtue of having a textured acidity, so admirable and so hard to find, not unlike an excellent Loire Chenin or cool-climate Chard. It’s a deeply cerebral wine with razor fine layers of complexity that slowly peel themselves away. It adds something delicious to the growing conversation of truly terroir driven Canadian wines, a must-try for anyone invested in the cause!
Brimming with energy, texture and intensity. Lees ageing builds mid-palate density and salinity that counterbalances the fresh fruit and tactile acidity. The freshness and tightness is carried across the palate with a persistent, generous finish.
