Bouchard Pere & Fils Chambertin 'Clos De Beze' Grand Cru 2017

Product description

The most prestigious Grand Cru in Gevrey-Chambertin is also one of the oldest walled vineyards in France.  The famous 'Clos' was created in the 7th century by the monks from the Abbey of Beze in a prime location on their vast estate.  In 1395 Philippe le Hardi decided to improve the quality of the wines and banned the gamay variety in favour of pinot noir on his land.  Later, Chambertin Clos de Beze shared the imperial crown with Chambertin ensuring that during his reign, Napoleon would drink no other wines!

The Clos de Beze pinot noir grapes received east exposure light in soil composed of marly limestone, clay, and crumbled rocks.  Fermentation took place in small containers, followed by maturation for 12-14 months in French oak with 45-60% new oak.  The wine has complex and intense aromas.  Structured - though not excessively - and with lovely fleshiness, this is a sumptuous wine with great aging potential.

96 Points - Wine Spectator     Macerated cherry, wild strawberry and mineral aromas and flavors highlight this taut, racy red. As this builds to a long conclusion, the intensity, fat and silky texture emerge, only to be challenged by solid grip on the very long, spice-tinged finish. Best from 2023 through 2045.
