Gravas del Maipo is born as a tribute by Concha y Toro to the majestic Andes and the hidden gravel from silently eroded, displaced and moulded soils year after year in the thousands of years old Maipo basin. It reflects the challenge of positioning Chile as a high-quality wine producer and the constant and passionate search to identify terroirs that faithfully express the character of a grape variety.
In the middle of the Maipo Valley, the vineyards for this Gravas were planted in the first half of the 2000s on the alluvial soils on the southern bank of the Maipo River. Aging lasted 14 months, with 26% new oak. A fruit-forward syrah with tremendous fruity expression. The extractions have been more moderate in recent vintages, and that's especially noticeable in this softer-bodied, lighter-textured version from a hot, dry year with lower yields and in which the fruit came straight from the vineyard loaded with flavour. A delicious Syrah to drink now or to cellar for years.
