The 2017 Mt. Veeder is inky purple in color. The nose is brooding and dark with reduced blackcurrant and blueberry crumble. Anise, cigar tobacco and crushed violets match the dark fruit on the nose. The palate is round and velvety, with loads of mocha/coffee grounds as well as vanilla bean and cassis. Although near black in color the tannins are soft, present and chalky but not overbearing. The firm mountain acidity balances the tannins. There is a long mocha blackcurrant finish. This beautifully balanced wine will age nicely over the next 14-16 years (2033-2035).
