Spatlese means the grapes were harvested ripe or late enough to potentially make a wine a sweeter than normal. Even so spätlese only refers to the ripeness level. It’s up to the winemaker to decide how much residual sugar is left in the wine and the final style. This Piesporter Spätlese is an opulent style with big, tropical fruit flavours, citrus, sea salt and minerals with plenty of sweet fruit (108 grams per litre) to offset its acidity at 8.9 grams per litre. Best with tarte tatin or a Weis favourite, salted caramel.
