Castello Romitorio, a massive twelfth-century hilltop fortress in Montalcino, since 1986 has produced exquisite Tuscan wines, grappa, and olive oil in the best traditions of the region. After acquiring the estate in 1984, artist Sandro Chia spent the next several years restoring Castello Romitorio and transforming its lands into vineyards. He promptly constructed a cellar on the castle's ground floor with the most advanced equipment available, with keen respect, though, for ancient techniques. To ensure the highest quality, he recently enlisted the expertise of the one of the country's leading oenologist, Carlo Ferrini. Sandro Chia is the internationally renowned artist who owns this Brunello Di Montalcino Tuscan estate. Because Sandro's paintings appear on most of the estate's wine labels, each bottle is a work of art. Above all, though, these are terrific and elegant wines. For two decades, Castello Romitorio has received top reviews from the most prestigious critics. The Brunello of Montalcino stands as the cornerstone of their production. Made from only the "Brunello" strain of the Sangiovese Grosso grape, this wine is one of the most treasured of all Italian reds. A careful selection of the harvest's bounty, strict adherence to technique, and constant checks during the aging process transform the grape into one of Italy's most revered wines.
95 Points - James Suckling
A dense and rich Brunello with lots of ripe fruit, spices and hints of new wood. Full-bodied, chewy and rich. A muscular wine that needs time to come together. Better after 2022.
95 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The Castello Romitorio 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is a suave and supple expression that shows a slightly more opulent texture compared to many of its peers. The Castello Romitorio vineyards tend to be cool, both in terms of exposure and soils, and the estate shows its best results in a warm and sunny vintage exactly like 2015. You taste the natural richness and exuberance of the fruit, with variety-specific elements of wild cherry, blue flowers and soft earth. The house style prizes more width and latitude in terms of mouthfeel. That attractive medium to full-bodied style is achieved thanks to 24 months of oak aging. At the end of the day, the quality of the fruit is really what shines brightest here.
