Ehrenfelser is a white grape of German origin. Created by Dr. Heinrich Birk in 1929, it’s a crossbreed of Riesling with the French grape variety called Knipperle.
It was first grown in the Rheinhessen and Palatinate regions of Germany. However, similar to many other white German grapes, the planting of Ehrenfelser has decreased dramatically in the past few decades.
Outside of Germany, Ehrenfelser has found some popularity in the Okanagan Valley, BC, Canada. The famous wineries such as Gray Monk, Cedar Creek, Lake Breeze, Mount Boucherie, Summerhill and Gehringer Brothers have been making incredible Ehrenfelser. Besides Canada, a few wineries are growing the white grape in Canterbury and Washington State as well as New Zealand.
Ehrenfelser tends to thrive well in places where Riesling struggles to grow, so that’s commonly one of the reasons the grape would be chosen over the world famous Riesling.
