Arneis
Arneis is a white grape variety from the Piedmont region of Italy. Arneis is a crisp and floral varietal that can be difficult to grow which creates dry and full-bodied wines with tasting notes of apricots and pears.
Arneis History
Historians agree that Arneis was born in Piedmont, Italy, but can’t decide on how long it’s been grown in the area. Some documented sources state it was first found in the 15th century!
Despite sharing many synonyms, Arneis has no genetic relationship to the popular Piedmontese red grape Nebbiolo. However, they do have a history together. For the longest time, Arneis grape was used to soften the harshness of Nebbiolo in the Barolo region. The final product will be called either Nebbiolo Bianco or Barolo Bianco.
When planting grapes, the two are often planted together. When Arneis ripens, it’s sweet scents attract birds and keeps them away from Nebbiolo clusters, which are considered a lot more valuable.
Arneis Wine Regions
Arneis is found primarily in Piedmont, Italy. It’s allowed to be used as a blending grape in red Nebbiolo wines, but that’s not a common practice.
Outside of Italy, Arneis can be found in the Oregon wine region of the Willamette Valley and California wine region of Sonoma County.
Arneis Viticulture and Winemaking
Arneis is not an easy grape to cultivate, due to its tendency to overripe and naturally low acidity. It’s also known for its low crop yields, so until recently, Arneis wine production has been declining.
Although used to soften Nebbiolo historically, today it’s seen as a varietal wine with the potential to produce high quality perfumed wines with scents of apricots, peaches, almonds and pears.
