Product description

The 2021 Castello di Ama 'San Lorenzo' Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a red wine from the Chianti Classico region in Tuscany, Italy. Named after the picturesque San Lorenzo valley, this wine exemplifies the estate's commitment to quality, tradition, and the expression of Sangiovese in its purest form.

Vineyard and Production

  • Grape Composition: Predominantly Sangiovese, with small amounts of Merlot and Malvasia Nera.
  • Vineyards: Sourced from the estate’s historic vineyards—Bellavista, Casuccia, San Lorenzo, and Montebuoni—located at elevations between 460 and 525 meters above sea level.
  • Soil: Clay and calcareous composition, providing excellent drainage and a distinctive mineral profile.
  • Vinification: Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by aging in oak barrels to enhance complexity, texture, and depth.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Bright medium ruby red with a luminous rim.
  • Aroma: Elegant and refined, featuring vibrant notes of cherry, cranberry, dried flowers, cedar, and a touch of smokiness.
  • Palate: Juicy and structured, with fine-grained tannins and impressive length. Layers of dark red fruit, licorice, spice, leather, and graphite lead to a clean, mineral-driven finish.

Critical Acclaim

  • James Suckling: 99 points – ' This is really perfumed and gorgeous, with black cherries, blackcurrants and violets. Full-bodied with totally integrated tannins and a palate presence that is pretty spectacular. Wonderful finish. Give this three or four years. Try after 2027. '
  • Vinous (Antonio Galloni): 94 points – Praised for its power, depth, and dark red fruit character, with a structured profile and a long aging potential.

Serving and Pairing

Decant for at least one hour before serving at 16-18°C (61-64°F) to allow the wine’s aromas and structure to fully develop. This Chianti Classico Gran Selezione pairs beautifully with bistecca alla fiorentina, wild boar ragù, aged pecorino cheese, and truffle-infused dishes. Its balance of acidity and tannins makes it a great match for rich pasta dishes and roasted game meats.
