Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte
Smith Haut Lafitte is a prestigious winery located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux, France. Situated in the Graves region, this historic estate is owned by the Cathiard family, who acquired it in 1990 and have since transformed it into one of the most revered wineries in Bordeaux.
Renowned wine critic Neal Martin has described Smith Haut Lafitte as "one of the leading estates in Pessac-Léognan," praising its consistent quality and commitment to excellence. James Suckling, another influential wine critic, has commended the winery for producing "wines of incredible precision and beauty."
Among the standout wines crafted by Smith Haut Lafitte is their Grand Vin, a Bordeaux blend predominantly made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. The Grand Vin consistently receives accolades for its depth, elegance, and age-worthiness. It showcases complex aromas of black fruits, tobacco, and graphite, with a velvety texture and a long, refined finish.
The winery's white wine, Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc, is equally impressive. Made primarily from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, it exhibits vibrant citrus flavors, floral aromatics, and a remarkable balance of freshness and richness. This white wine has garnered praise for its complexity and aging potential.
Smith Haut Lafitte also produces a second wine, Les Hauts de Smith, which offers a more approachable and accessible expression of the estate's winemaking prowess.
Under the ownership of the Cathiard family, Smith Haut Lafitte has undergone extensive renovations, including the construction of a state-of-the-art winery and the implementation of sustainable viticultural practices. These efforts have further elevated the winery's reputation and cemented its position as one of Bordeaux's finest producers.
