Meiomi Wines
Meiomi Wines, established in 2006 by fifth-generation winemaker Joseph Wagner, has become a prominent name in California's wine industry. The brand is celebrated for its approachable and fruit-forward wines, particularly its Pinot Noir, which has garnered widespread acclaim. By sourcing grapes from California's coastal regions, Meiomi crafts wines that embody the diverse terroirs of the state.
History and Evolution
The name "Meiomi" translates to "coast" in the language of the Wappo and Yuki tribes, reflecting the winery's commitment to coastal vineyards. Joseph Wagner, son of Chuck Wagner of Caymus Vineyards, founded Meiomi to create a Pinot Noir that blended grapes from Sonoma, Monterey, and Santa Barbara counties. This innovative approach resulted in a wine with consistent quality and broad appeal. In 2015, Wagner sold Meiomi to Constellation Brands for $315 million, a testament to the brand's rapid success and market impact.
Philosophy and Winemaking Approach
Meiomi's winemaking philosophy centers on blending fruit from various coastal regions to achieve complexity and balance. By sourcing grapes from distinct appellations, the winery captures a range of flavors and characteristics, resulting in wines that are both approachable and layered. The Pinot Noir, for instance, is aged for six months in French oak barrels, imparting notes of toasted mocha and enhancing its depth.
The People Behind the Brand
While Joseph Wagner was the visionary behind Meiomi's inception, the brand's growth and success have been supported by a dedicated team of viticulturists and winemakers. Their collective expertise ensures that Meiomi's wines maintain their signature style and quality across vintages. Under Constellation Brands' ownership, the team continues to innovate and expand the portfolio, introducing varietals like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon to meet consumer demand.
