More Information
Product description
Balblair 17 Year Old is an elegant, richly layered single malt Scotch whisky that originates from Edderton in the Northern Highlands. While Balblair historically categorized its whiskies strictly by vintage years (such as their old 1999 or 2000 expressions), the distillery underwent a massive rebrand to traditional age statements.
The 17-year-old expression was introduced as an exclusive anchor for The Travel Collection (Travel Retail/Duty Free). It acts as a bridge between the core range's 15 and 18-year-old expressions, purposefully dialed in to capture Balblair’s signature ester-driven, fruity spirit style paired with deep European oak influence.
Spirit Description
Balblair utilizes an exceptionally slow distillation process and captures their spirit cut intentionally to draw out intense orchard fruit notes alongside heavy, leathery oils. For the 17-year-old, the liquid is initially matured in American oak ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred into first-fill Spanish oak Oloroso sherry butts for its final finish.
Appearance: Dark bronze to warm amber.
Aroma: Deeply expressive. It opens with rich notes of dark chocolate cocoa, juicy raisins, and prune juice, shifting into sweet stewed fruits, walnut oil, and warm festive spices like nutmeg and clove.
Palate: Luxuriously thick, oily, and velvety. An initial wave of heather honey, blood orange zest, and toffee apples moves into a complex mid-palate of chocolate muffins, hazelnut crunch, and dark bramble berries.
Finish: Long, warming, and brilliantly structured, showcasing residual baking spices, old leather, dry oak tannins, and bitter dark chocolate.
ABV: 46% (Natural color, non-chill filtered)
Accolades
The Balblair 17-year-old is highly decorated within the premium travel retail circuit. It holds a Gold Outstanding medal from the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) and a Gold from the New York International Spirits Competition. Major editorial platforms like Whisky Advocate have awarded it an exceptional score of 93/100, calling it "a great find" where the sherry wood has truly worked its magic.
Food Pairing
The combination of bright, ester-heavy Highland distillate and first-fill Spanish oak gives this 17-year-old a robust flavor profile that pairs spectacularly with food:
Savoury: The leather and dark fruit notes make it an incredible companion to duck breast with a cherry reduction or slow-cooked venison stew.
Cheese: Pair it with aged, crystalline Gouda or a sharp, crumbly blue cheese. The whisky's honeyed sweetness and baking spices contrast beautifully with the intense, salty dairy notes.
Dessert: It pairs flawlessly with bonfire-night toffee apples, dark chocolate pralines, or a traditional pecan pie where the nuttiness of the dram can really sing.
