El Enemigo is a labor of love by Adrianna Catena of Catena Zapata fame and Alejandro Vigil. Adrianna grew up around wine but went into academia, eventually earning a Ph.D. in History. Alejandro was fascinated by winemaking from a young age but put those ambitions aside to become an agricultural engineer. While both enjoyed illustrious careers in their respective fields, they found that their true calling was in wine craftsmanship.
94 Points - James Suckling
Blackberry, red-plum and graphite on the nose, as well as herbal and smoky notes. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm tannins. Fleshy texture on the palate with structure and a ink-like feel. Savory finish. Hints of chocolate at the end.
93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The unusually pale and aromatic 2018 Bonarda Single Vineyard La Esperanza was produced with grapes from San Martín in the east of Mendoza on deep, sandy and clay soils that seem to deliver great finesse. It's only 13.5% alcohol and with very good freshness, to the point that it made it feel a bit like Pinot Noir. It's floral and expressive, elegant and soft, with some developed flavors and aromas. It's juicy, long and nicely textured with very round tannins. Quite surprising, awesome even!
91+ Points - Vinous
The 2018 Bonarda El Enemigo Bonarda Single Vineyard La Esperanza comes from an old pergola vineyard in San Martín that was planted in sandy soils. The no-nonsense, ripe nose presents blackberry and raspberry with hints of herb. It’s broad on the palate with finely grained, ripe tannins that eventually take over, encouraged by the juicy acidity before oaky notes appear at the end.
