Introduction
Catena Zapata Malbec Adrianna Vineyard Fortuna Terrae 2021 is a red wine from Argentina, produced in the Mendoza region, specifically the Uco Valley subregion and the high-altitude Gualtallary district. The wine is made by the legendary Catena Zapata family winery, which is renowned for its role in elevating Argentine Malbec to global acclaim. Now run by fourth-generation vigneron Laura Catena, the winery's philosophy is centred on the deep belief that high-altitude vineyards, such as the Adrianna Vineyard, possess exceptional, hidden qualities for grape growing. The 'Fortuna Terrae' parcel name means 'Luck of the Land' in Latin, referring to its cool, comparatively deep loam soils that impart freshness to the wine.
Wine Description
The wine is 100% Malbec. It exhibits a dark purple hue. The aromatic profile is intensely expressive, with enticing floral notes of violet, hibiscus, lavender, and dried flowers. These are layered over a foundation of black fruit, mountain herbs, orange peel, and spice. It is a full-bodied wine. The palate is rich, taut, and deeply concentrated, offering compelling combination of dryness and juiciness. Flavours include black cherry, raspberry coulis, red currant, and hints of dark chocolate and graphite. Stylistically, it is a beautifully mineral red with impeccable purity, showcasing a harmony of power and etherealness. The wine underwent a meticulous 16-month aging process in foudres and concrete vats. The finish is exceptionally long, transparent, and mineral-driven. The ABV is 13.9%. The optimal drinking window is to enjoy a few years or decades after harvest, or after 2023.
This full-bodied and robust Malbec is a great pairing for steaks, barbecue fare, and full-flavoured cheeses. Examples of great pairings include grilled steak, roast beef, and rack of lamb.
Vintage Quality
The 2021 vintage is noted for having produced a particularly dynamic wine that continuously gains power, depth, and tensile structure in the glass. The high altitude and deep soils of the Adrianna Vineyard impart optimal acidity and freshness to the wines.
