The inception of Oak & Priest traces back to 2005 when Priestley and Oakes, both avid wine enthusiasts, decided to venture into winemaking. After exploring opportunities in Canada's Okanagan Valley, they partnered with Vinequest Wine Group in 2007 to acquire Black Hills Estate Winery, a premier Canadian winery. Their journey into Californian winemaking began in 2008 when they collaborated with esteemed Napa Valley winemakers Les Behrens and Lisa Drinkward. This partnership led to the creation of limited-production wines like "The Director" Petite Sirah and "The Producer" Cabernet Sauvignon, each limited to 56 cases per vintage. Despite setbacks such as the 2020 Glass Fire, which destroyed their winery and inventory, Oak & Priest rebounded by collaborating with winemakers Rudy Zuidema and Curt Schalchlin to release new vintages, including "The Bomb" Napa Cabernet Sauvignon and "Sin Toro" Napa Grenache.
