The Black Tot Historic Solera Rum is a premium Caribbean rum, a blend of rums from Guyana, Barbados, and Jamaica. The Black Tot brand, owned by Elixir Distillers, is a tribute to the long tradition of naval perpetual blending and takes its name from Black Tot Day (July 31, 1970), the day the Royal Navy ended the daily rum ration for its sailors. Black Tot honours this history by crafting nuanced and complex rum blends that feature total transparency on their composition and provenance.

Rum Description

  • Colour: Copper amber or dark amber with brown highlights.

  • Aroma: The nose is a decadent blend of figs, plums, chocolate, and fudge, with warming spices emerging. Other notes include rum and raisin fudge, chocolate covered cappuccino, dried cranberries, redcurrants, toasted cinnamon sticks, and sultanas.

  • Palate: The palate offers rich, velvety textures with flavours of dark chocolate, a subtle coffee undertone, nuts, and ripe figs. Notes of pink grapefruit, lemon oil, sultanas, plums, and baked banana build alongside the sweetness complemented by espresso. The body is rich and full-bodied.

  • Finish: A satisfyingly dry and long finish with lingering spice and dried fruit notes. Hints of citrus zest brighten the experience alongside ripe tropical fruit notes and lingering spice and dried fruit.

  • Varietal Composition: The rum is distilled from molasses. The blend consists of rums from Guyana, Barbados, and Jamaica. The composition is 40% Guyanese rum (3–5 years, pot/column still), 35% Barbadian rum (5 years, pot still), 20% unaged Guyanese rum (pot/column still), and 5% Jamaican rum (3 years, high ester profile). It is aged in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry oak casks (Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso) and then matured through a three tier solera system.

  • Stylistic Notes: This is a rich, decadent, and complex rum. The traditional three-tier Solera process of blending rums of various ages results in remarkable depth and character, with an unadulterated taste.
