Introduction
Gordon & MacPhail Milton 1949 72 Year Old 'Private Collection' is an exceptionally rare Single Malt Scotch Whisky from the country of Scotland, specifically the Speyside region. This expression was distilled at the Milton Distillery, which is known today as Strathisla, the oldest working distillery in Speyside. The distillery was acquired by Chivas Brothers in 1950 and renamed Strathisla in 1951. This bottling by independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail is the oldest and last-ever single malt from the company to carry the Milton Distillery name, paying homage to the distillery's original identity.
Spirit Description
Distilled in 1949, this whisky spent an astounding 72 years maturing in a single first-fill sherry puncheon, cask number 383, before being bottled in 2022. The whisky is described as having a rich, fruity, and full-bodied character. The nose is complex, featuring baked forest fruits, rich sherry influences, sweet vanilla pod, and Seville orange. Stewed fruit aromas give way to vibrant festive spice and soft lemon zest. The palate is inviting and vibrant, with flavours of butterscotch, bright citrus, nutmeg, apple pie, and caramel. Notes of baked apple, poached pear, and honeycomb also come to the fore. The long finish is characterised by lingering apple, dark toffee, and a subtle hint of smoke. It was bottled at its natural cask strength of 48.6% ABV.
