Product description
Introduction
This exceptional red wine is from Italy, specifically the heart of the Chianti Classico region in Tuscany. It is produced by Fontodi, a highly respected estate known for its uncompromising approach to quality and its focus on organic viticulture. 'Vigna del Sorbo' is a single-vineyard wine and is considered Fontodi's flagship bottling, having been relabeled as a 'Gran Selezione' since the 2010 vintage. The vineyard is located directly in front of the winery, on a southwest-facing slope at 450 metres. It lies in the sun-drenched Conca d'Oro basin of Panzano, an area known for distinguishing itself with its vines. This historic wine is a selection of fruit from an approximately nine-hectare plot with vines that are over 50 years old.
Wine Description
The 2022 Fontodi 'Vigna del Sorbo' is a powerful yet refined expression of Sangiovese. It is predominantly Sangiovese, crafted from 100% Sangiovese grapes. The wine is a darker expression of Sangiovese.
The aromas are deep, opening with notes of black cherry, plum, violet, and graphite, layered with hints of tobacco, balsamic herbs, and warm spice. Reviewers also note clear and fresh aromas of black cherries and citrus rind with some blood orange undertones. It is described as having a supple nose with dark red fruits and a little iron tinge.
On the palate, it delivers blackberry, black currant, plum, tar, and sweet spice flavours. It has a polished texture and a long, intense finish. The wine is unevolved at this stage, showing plenty of fruit that needs to come together with the structural components. It features thick, beefy tannins that are very fine but are still very young. The mouthfeel is plump, medium-bodied with a solid fruit core, and a very long, lingering finish. Subtle notes of earth, cocoa, and savory minerality build through the mid-palate. It is extremely structured and delivers a long, focused, and elegant finish. The vines are planted atop Galestro (shale) soils. The wine ages in barrique and French oak foudre for 24 months. The optimal drinking window is suggested to be from 2027 or 2028 through 2036 or 2045.
