The Balanced Soul of Islay Established in 1779 by John P. Simpson, Bowmore is the oldest licensed distillery on Islay and one of the oldest in all of Scotland. While its neighboring distilleries on the south coast are famous for their explosive, medicinal peat smoke, Bowmore is celebrated for its poise, elegance, and symmetry. The Heritage Craft: Floor Maltings and Atlantic Vaults Bowmore is one of the very few remaining distilleries that maintains its own traditional floor maltings. Around a quarter of their barley is still steeped, turned by hand on historic stone floors, and gently dried in kilns fired with local Islay peat, resulting in a controlled, medium-smoke profile (around 25 ppm).

The real magic, however, happens during maturation. Bowmore’s legendary No. 1 Vaults is the oldest maturation warehouse in Scotland and the only one sitting below sea level. Battered by the waves of Loch Indaal, this damp, cold subterranean sanctuary allows the spirit to breathe the salty Atlantic air over decades. This slow, maritime aging process polishes the peat into a soft, velvety smoke, while infusing the whisky with a distinct sea-salt minerality.

The Sherry Wood Affinity Bowmore’s heavy use of high-quality, first-fill ex-Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks is central to its identity. When this medium-peated, coastal spirit meets the rich wood of European oak, it creates an iconic flavor profile: a beautiful contrast of dark chocolate, sun-dried raisins, and sticky figs wrapped in a blanket of gentle bonfire smoke and sea spray.
