Château Canon-la-Gaffelière is a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate located on the lower slopes of Saint-Émilion on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Owned by Count Stephan von Neipperg, the estate is celebrated for pioneering organic viticulture on the Right Bank and producing expressive, opulent red wines defined by a uniquely high proportion of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Unlike many neighboring Saint-Émilion properties dominated almost exclusively by Merlot, Canon-la-Gaffelière features a distinct microclimate and vine composition that sets its wines apart.

Warm Clay-Sand & Limestone Soils: Situated at the foot of the Saint-Émilion hill, the vineyard’s soil blends clay, sand, and limestone over a cooler subsoil. This unique mix heats up quickly in the spring, allowing late-ripening Cabernet varieties to reach complete maturity.

The Cabernet Core: The vineyard is planted with approximately 55% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The unusually high concentration of Cabernets delivers exceptional aromatic lift—featuring floral violet, graphite, exotic spices, and tobacco—alongside firm, fine-grained tannic structure.

Certified Organic Farming: Fully certified organic since the 2014 vintage, the estate avoids synthetic chemicals, focusing instead on biodiversity, gentle parcel-by-parcel extraction, and aging in 50% to 80% new French oak to highlight pure fruit and natural freshness.
