Château Latour Collection
The Fortress of Pauillac | Enclos Deep Gravel & Clay Terroir | Sovereign 1855 First Growth Power & Precision
Located in the southeastern corner of Pauillac bordering Saint-Julien on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Château Latour is widely celebrated as the most powerful, consistent, and long-lived First Growth (Premier Grand Cru Classé) of the 1855 Classification. With winemaking records dating back to the 14th century, the iconic estate and its stone tower (La Tour de Saint-Lambert) have stood watch over the Gironde estuary for centuries. Since 1993, under the ownership of François Pinault and the management of Frédéric Engerer, Latour has redefined modern winemaking through pioneering organic transition and a total departure from the En Primeur system to release aged wines only when perfectly mature.
The winemaking philosophy at Château Latour centers on showcasing pure structural density, dark-fruit intensity, and undeniable longevity. By harvesting plot-by-plot from its world-famous L'Enclos vineyard and aging under uncompromising cellar control, the winemaking team crafts a majestic expression of Pauillac characterized by firm tannins, graphite minerality, and immense power.
Terroir & Viticulture
-
Soil & Geography: The heart of Latour is L'Enclos, a 47-hectare walled parcel situated adjacent to the Gironde estuary. The soil features deep Garonne gravel croupes over a subsoil of dense clay and marl. The estuary acts as a thermal buffer against frost and heat extremes, while the deep clay sublayers retain vital moisture during dry summers.
-
Grape Varieties & Farming:
-
Cabernet Sauvignon (~85–95% in Grand Vin / 80% of vineyard): Forms the legendary spine of Latour, imparting intense blackcurrant, graphite, cedar, and impenetrable tannic architecture built for decades of aging.
-
Merlot (~5–15% in blend / 18% of vineyard): Contributes plush mid-palate richness, velvety texture, and sweet dark plum aromatics.
-
Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot (~1–2% combined): Provide delicate notes of crushed violet, exotic spice, and added color depth.
-
-
Cellar Precision: Harvested by hand and certified 100% organic, grapes undergo optical sorting and parcel-by-parcel fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The Grand Vin matures for up to 18–22 months in 100% new French oak barrels before undergoing extensive cellar aging prior to commercial release.
