Chateau Palmer Collection
The Velvet Jewel of Margaux: Discover the Legendary 1855 Troisième Cru Estate Celebrated for Its Equal Blend of Cabernet and Merlot, Sensual Aromatics, and Biodynamic Precision.
The Peerless Icon of Elegance and Innovation
Established in the heart of the Margaux appellation, Château Palmer holds a legendary standing among Bordeaux’s finest estates. Officially classified as a Troisième Cru (3rd Growth) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Palmer has consistently rivaled—and often surpassed—the First Growths in reputation, price, and critical acclaim. Named after Major General Charles Palmer, who acquired the property in 1814, the estate has been co-owned and meticulously guided since 1938 by the historic Sichel and Mähler-Besse families.
Under the visionary leadership of CEO Thomas Duroux, Château Palmer converted entirely to biodynamic viticulture in 2014, making it a pioneering pioneer among elite Bordeaux estates. Known for its distinctively high proportion of Merlot, Palmer captures a unique duality: the structural nobility of traditional Left Bank Cabernet Sauvignon combined with the lush, opulent warmth of Right Bank Merlot.
Gravel Terroir & Biodynamic Harmony
Spanning 66 hectares across high-elevation gravel terraces overlooking the Gironde estuary, Château Palmer benefits from exceptional drainage and microclimate protection. The deep, nutrient-poor gravel beds mixed with subsoils of clay and sand drive root systems deep into the earth:
-
Merlot (~47%): Unusually prominent for a Left Bank estate. Grown on clay-gravel plots, it delivers signature velvety texture, lush dark cherry, violet floral lifts, and mid-palate richness.
-
Cabernet Sauvignon (~47%): Planted on the leanest gravel crests, supplying fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity, cassis fruit, and an enduring cellaring backbone.
-
Petit Verdot (~6%): Cultivated on warm gravels to inject exotic spice, deep indigo color, and aromatic complexity.
Through strict biodynamic farming—free from synthetic herbicides and pesticides—the estate fosters living soils and resilient vines. In the gravity-fed cellar, plot-by-plot vinification takes place in conical stainless steel vats before aging in oak barrels (typically around 50% new for the Grand Vin) for 20 to 22 months.
The World-Class Wine Portfolio
-
Château Palmer (Grand Vin - Troisième Cru Classé): The ultimate synthesis of power, silkiness, and aromatic complexity. Intensely perfumed with notes of violets, blackcurrant, dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, and subtle truffle. Seamless on the palate with extraordinarily fine tannins, it evolves effortlessly in the cellar for 20 to 50+ years.
-
Alter Ego de Palmer: Introduced in 1998, Alter Ego is not a traditional "second wine" made from lesser grapes, but rather a distinct expression of the Palmer terroir crafted with a different blend ratio and earlier-drinking philosophy. Vibrant, fruit-forward, and supple, it bursts with dark berries, fresh herbs, and soft spice over a 10 to 25-year cellaring window.
-
Palmer "Historical XIXth Century Wine": A rare, collector's cuvée crafted in homage to 19th-century Bordeaux traditions, blending Château Palmer wine with a small percentage of Syrah from the Rhône Valley. Bold, spicy, and deeply concentrated, it offers a fascinating glimpse into winemaking heritage.
Epicurean Food Pairings
-
Château Palmer Grand Vin: Pan-seared duck breast with cherry or plum sauce, roasted rack of lamb with herbs, roasted venison tenderloin, braised veal chops, or wild mushroom risotto topped with shaved black truffles.
-
Alter Ego de Palmer: Prime ribeye steak, roasted pheasant, braised short ribs, grilled rack of lamb, or aged hard cheeses like Comté and Gouda.
