Chateau Petrus Collection
The Pinnacle of Pomerol: Experience the World's Most Coveted Merlot, Born from Mythic Blue Clay, Uncompromising Precision, and Unrivaled Decadence.
The Crown Jewel of the Right Bank
Situated at the highest point of the Pomerol plateau, Petrus stands alone at the absolute apex of the fine wine world. Unlike the Left Bank's grand châteaux, Petrus produces no official "classification"—because Pomerol has none—yet it consistently commands higher prestige and value than any First Growth. Guided into legend during the 20th century by Madame Loubat and Jean-Pierre Moueix, and managed today by Jean Moueix and legendary winemaker Olivier Berrouet, Petrus represents the ultimate expression of single-varietal Merlot.
Rare, mythical, and produced in extremely limited quantities (typically around 30,000 bottles annually), Petrus is celebrated for its extraordinary aromatic intensity, seamless velvet texture, and ability to age gracefully across decades.
The Mythic Blue Clay & Viticultural Perfection
The secret to the singular character of Petrus lies in its unique 11.4-hectare vineyard sitting atop a geological anomaly known as the Boutonnière (buttonhole) of Pomerol:
-
Smectite Blue Clay: Dating back over 40 million years, this thick, dark blue clay subsoil expands to absorb water during wet spells and retains it throughout hot summers. It provides the vine roots with a constant, stress-free water supply while imparting a profound, iron-rich tannic density found nowhere else on earth.
-
100% Merlot: While historically blended with small amounts of Cabernet Franc, the vineyard is now planted entirely to Merlot. The combination of old vines (averaging over 40 years) and blue clay yields berries with concentrated sugar, crisp natural acidity, and unmatched phenolic richness.
-
Uncompromising Harvesting: Harvesting at Petrus is done manually in a single afternoon once perfect ripeness is achieved, ensuring uniform maturity across the entire crop.
In the cellar, gentle extraction takes place in temperature-controlled concrete vats before the wine moves to French oak barrels (around 50% new in modern vintages) for 18 to 20 months, allowing the purest expression of terroir to shine without being masked by wood.
The Grand Vin
-
Petrus (Grand Vin): The sole wine produced by the estate—Petrus does not make a second wine. Intensely complex and opulent, it unfolds with explosive aromas of dark plums, black cherries, black truffles, cocoa, violet, and subtle Asian spice. On the palate, it delivers incredible volume and power with silky, seamless tannins that coat the mouth without feeling heavy. Highly sought after by collectors, top vintages easily cellar for 30 to 70+ years.
Epicurean Food Pairings
-
Petrus: Roasted squab with truffle reduction, pan-seared duck breast, roasted rack of milk-fed veal, slow-braised beef cheeks with pomme purée, wild game birds, or dishes heavily featuring fresh black truffles and roasted chanterelles.
