Chateau Pichon Baron Collection
The Aristocrat of Pauillac: Experience the Historic 1855 Deuxième Cru Classé Estate Renowned for Its Majestic Turreted Château, Powerful Cabernet Dominance, and Muscular Elegance.
A Noble Heritage of Distinction
Formally known as Château Pichon Longueville Baron, Château Pichon Baron is one of the most imposing and revered estates in the Médoc. Classified as a Deuxième Cru Classé (Second Growth) in the official 1855 Bordeaux Classification, the property was originally part of a vast estate created in the late 17th century by Pierre de Rauzan. In 1850, the estate was divided between the founder's descendants, giving birth to two neighboring legends: Pichon Baron and Pichon Comtesse.
Since 1987, under the ownership of AXA Millésimes and the expert stewardship of Christian Seely, Pichon Baron has undergone a dramatic renaissance. With a modern cellar submerged beneath a reflective water pool in front of its iconic 19th-century fairy-tale château, the estate combines state-of-the-art precision with timeless Pauillac power.
Historic Gravel Terraces & Micro-Parcel Precision
Spanning 73 hectares in the southern section of Pauillac—directly adjacent to Château Latour—the estate's finest terroir sits on deep quaternary gravel ridges (croupes) overlooking the Gironde estuary:
-
Cabernet Sauvignon (~65%): The backbone of the grand vin, planted on the historical "Butte de Pichon Baron" gravel plateau. It provides dark cassis intensity, firm architecture, graphite minerality, and immense aging capacity.
-
Merlot (~30%): Cultivated on sandy-clay gravel soils to impart opulent flesh, plum fruit, velvety mid-palate roundness, and rich balance.
-
Cabernet Franc (~3%) & Petit Verdot (~2%): Used selectively to enhance floral nuance, fresh acidity, and exotic spice accents.
In the gravity-fed vat room, plot-by-plot fermentations occur in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The Grand Vin matures for 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels (typically 70% to 80% new), developing profound structural complexity and integration.
The World-Class Wine Portfolio
-
Château Pichon Baron (Grand Vin - Deuxième Cru Classé): The quintessential expression of masculine Pauillac power and nobility. Crafted exclusively from the historic core gravel parcels, it offers dense, expressive aromas of crème de cassis, cedarwood, crushed graphite, dark chocolate, and cigar box. On the palate, muscular yet refined tannins frame a long, opulent finish. Built to cellar gracefully for 20 to 50+ years.
-
Les Tourelles de Longueville: Introduced as a second wine in 1989, Les Tourelles is sourced primarily from the "Sainte-Anne" vineyard plot, which has a higher proportion of Merlot. Generous, fruit-forward, and supple, it bursts with ripe blackberry, black cherry, and gentle oak spice. Designed for earlier drinking within a 10 to 20-year window.
-
Les Griffons de Pichon Baron: Created with the 2012 vintage, Les Griffons offers a stylistic bridge closer to the Grand Vin. Made with a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon from gravel soils, it presents a firm, fresh structure with dark fruit character and refined tannins, ideal for cellaring 12 to 25 years.
Epicurean Food Pairings
-
Château Pichon Baron Grand Vin: Prime roasted ribeye, rack of lamb with garlic-rosemary crust, wild venison tenderloin with a red wine reduction, roasted pigeon, or truffle-infused beef tenderloin.
-
Les Griffons & Les Tourelles de Longueville: Grilled sirloin steak, braised short ribs, duck breast with berry compote, roasted pheasant, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté and Gouda.
