Pioneers of Chilean Carmenère, Old-Vine Restoration, and Terroir-Driven Elegance: Discover Four Generations of Chilean Winemaking Mastery.
Four Generations of Chilean Terroir Innovation
Founded in 1934 by Italian immigrant Pietro De Martino Pascualone in Isla de Maipo,De Martino Winery stands as one of Chile’s most historic, visionary, and pioneering wine estates. Over four generations, the De Martino family has shaped the trajectory of modern South American winemaking through a commitment to sustainable viticulture, minimal intervention, and authentic sense-of-place expression.
De Martino holds a monumental place in wine history: in 1996, it became the very first winery to commercially label and export Chilean Carmenère as a distinct varietal after the grape was rediscovered. Furthermore, as Latin America's first carbon-neutral winery, De Martino combines historic legacy with forward-thinking stewardship. Sourcing grapes across diverse microclimates—from the coastal granite hills of Itata to the gravelly alluvial soils of Maipo Valley—De Martino crafts pure, balanced, and food-friendly wines celebrated by international critics.
Viticultural Philosophy & Industry Milestones
-
First Exporters of Carmenère (1996): De Martino bottled and exported the first wine officially labeled as Carmenère from theirAlto de Piedras vineyard in Isla de Maipo, proving to the world that Chile’s forgotten Bordeaux variety possessed world-class potential.
-
Centenary Vines & Ancient Winemaking (Itata Revival): Pioneers in restoring centuries-old dry-farmed bush vines in the Itata Valley, De Martino revitalized ancient winemaking techniques using native claytinajas (amphorae) and wild yeasts to express unadulterated fruit purity.
-
Sustainable & Organic Stewardship: Certified carbon-neutral since 2009, the family focuses on organic farming practices, early harvesting to maintain vibrant natural acidity, and aging in large neutral oakfoudres or concrete rather than heavily toasted new barriques.
