Alsace Wine
A Mosaic of Purity: Explore the Aromatic Brilliance and Volcanic Minerality of France’s Most Unique Borderland.
The Sun-Drenched Terroir of the Vosges
Tucked between the Vosges Mountains and the Rhine River on France’s eastern border, Alsace is a region of striking beauty and geological complexity. Protected by the mountains from heavy rainfall, Alsace is one of the driest and sunniest wine regions in France. This unique microclimate allows grapes to ripen slowly and fully, resulting in wines with intense aromatic purity, structural richness, and a vibrant, life-affirming acidity.
The Four Noble Grapes
Alsace is world-renowned for its "Noble Grapes," which are the only varieties permitted in the prestigious Grand Cru sites. Unlike much of France, these wines are typically labeled by the grape variety, prioritizing clarity for the enthusiast:
- Riesling: The king of Alsace. Unlike its sweeter German neighbors, Alsatian Riesling is typically bone-dry, powerful, and mineral-driven, with legendary aging potential.
- Gewürztraminer: An exotic explosion of lychee, rose petal, and spice. These wines are full-bodied and opulent, ranging from dry to lusciously sweet.
- Pinot Gris: Rich, smoky, and textured. Far removed from light Italian styles, this is a gastronomic wine with notes of apricot and forest floor.
- Muscat: Intensely floral on the nose yet surprisingly bone-dry and crisp on the palate—the perfect aperitif.
A Landscape of Diversity
Beyond the noble whites, Alsace offers incredible variety across all styles:
- Pinot Noir: The region's only red grape, producing elegant, light-to-medium-bodied wines with bright cherry fruit and earthy nuances.
- Crémant d’Alsace: A high-quality sparkling wine made using the traditional method. It is the most popular AOC sparkling wine in France outside of Champagne.
- Vendanges Tardives & SGN: Rare, late-harvest and botrytized dessert wines that represent the pinnacle of concentration and sweetness.
