The Heritage Clone Obsession

What separates Kistler from almost every other premium producer in North America is their fanatical devotion to proprietary plant material:

• The Singular Chardonnay Clone: Since the mid-1980s, Kistler has planted justone proprietary heritage Chardonnay clone—originally imported from Burgundy in the early 20th century—across all 15 of its vineyard sites. This creates a fascinating control variable: because the grape material is identical, the stark differences between each bottling are purely an expression of weather, soil, and elevation.

• The Dual Pinot Noir Selections: For their reds, Kistler relies on two distinct heritage clones pulled from a legendary Grand Cru vineyard in Burgundy, selected for their tiny berry size, low yields, and intense natural acidity.

In the Cellar: Living Biological Patinas

Kistler’s winemaking is a lesson in patient, calculated minimalism. The fruit is picked in the dead of night to preserve natural acidity and immediately sent to the winery:

• Chardonnay Mastery: All Chardonnays are fermented with native yeasts in subterranean barrel chais. The winery acts as an artisan curator, purchasing raw French oak, air-drying it for three years in Saint-Romain, and using the custom-built cooperage to let natural biological patinas shape the wine.

• Hands-Off Pinot Noir: The Pinot Noir program undergoes an incredibly gentle, non-interventionalist regime. There is no cold soaking, no mechanical pumping, no punch-downs for forced extraction, and zero press wine added back into the final juice. The deep color and muscular concentration come solely from meticulous vineyard farming.
