Sea Smoke Wines
The story of Sea Smoke begins with a specific atmospheric phenomenon and a singular vision for California viticulture. Founded in 1999 by entrepreneur Bob Davids, the winery was established on a south-facing bluff in the Sta. Rita Hills of Santa Barbara County. Davids, who had achieved immense success in the toy industry, sought to create a world-class Pinot Noir that could rival the great growths of Burgundy. He recognized that the unique geography of the Santa Ynez River canyon—a rare transverse valley where the mountains run east-to-west—created a natural funnel for cold Pacific air. This geography gives the winery its name, as a thick marine fog known as sea smoke rolls off the ocean and settles over the vines, providing a cooling influence that allows for an exceptionally long and slow ripening season.
The success of Sea Smoke is rooted in its status as a monopole, meaning every drop of wine produced comes exclusively from their 170-acre estate vineyard. This control allows the winemaking team, led by Don Schroeder, to maintain a meticulous level of consistency and quality. The estate is particularly famous for its trio of Pinot Noirs: Southing, Ten, and Grand. Southing is celebrated for its elegance and floral aromatics, reflecting the complexity of the southern exposure. In contrast, Ten is a more muscular and concentrated wine, named for the ten distinct French clones of Pinot Noir planted on the property. These wines, along with their highly regarded Chardonnay and the rare Sea Spray sparkling wine, have earned Sea Smoke a permanent place in the pantheon of California cult classics.
Beyond the liquid in the bottle, the winery is defined by a deep commitment to the land itself. Since 2013, the estate has been farmed using organic and biodynamic principles, treating the vineyard as a self-sustaining ecosystem. This holistic approach involves more than just avoiding chemicals; it includes the use of a resident goat herd for weed management and Anatolian Shepherds to protect the property. This dedication to "extreme farming" ensures that the mineral-rich, clay-and-shale soils are expressed clearly in the finished wine, which has trended toward greater finesse and lower alcohol levels over the last decade.
The history of Sea Smoke is also colored by several fascinating anecdotes that have contributed to its mystique. For years, the winery produced a Chardonnay called "Gratis" that was never put up for sale; instead, it was gifted exclusively to the most loyal members of their mailing list. Furthermore, while the 2004 film Sideways brought global fame to the Pinot Noir of the Santa Ynez Valley, Sea Smoke had already established such a fervent following that it remained largely unaffected by the sudden surge in regional tourism, maintaining its air of exclusivity. Even after its 2024 acquisition by Constellation Brands, the winery remains a benchmark for the region, proving that the combination of a unique microclimate and uncompromising standards can produce wines of truly haunting beauty.
