Product description

1. Introduction

Oban Little Bay is a single malt Scotch whisky that originates from Scotland, specifically the West Highland region in the town of Oban. The Oban Distillery, one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland, was established in 1794 by the brothers John and Hugh Stevenson. The distillery is one of the smallest in Scotland. It is uniquely positioned beneath a steep cliff overlooking Oban Bay, leading to its description as a "bridge between the Highlands and the Islands".

2. Spirit Description

The 'Little Bay' expression is a non-age statement single malt that is named after the smallest bay in Oban. It is crafted through a unique process of double maturation. The whisky is initially matured in rejuvenated American oak casks. It is then finished in smaller, 200-litre second-fill American oak ex-bourbon quarter casks and finally, a selection is finished in European oak sherry casks. This maturation process in different cask sizes and wood types is designed to intensify the flavour.

  • Colour: Bright amber.

  • Aroma: The nose is quite fragrant and complex. It features notes of dark fruit, dried apples, honey, banana, treacle tart, malt, and a sea-salty edge.

  • Palate: The palate is full-bodied and soft, with a buttery texture. The taste is complex, featuring Christmas spices, orange zest, nutmeg, cinnamon, and a subtle smokiness.

  • Body: Smooth, silky, and rich.

  • Finish: The finish is long and dry, with notes of lingering spice, dark fruit, and dark chocolate.

  • Stylistic Notes: This is a rich, intense expression with a bold and complex flavour profile. The smaller casks increase the interaction between the wood and the spirit, creating a whisky that is deeper and richer than the standard 14-year-old expression.

  • ABV: The alcoholic strength is 43% ABV.

3. Accolades

Oban Little Bay has received high praise in major competitions:

  • Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC) in 2017.

  • Silver Outstanding at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) in 2017.

4. Food Pairing

The whisky's complex spice and dark fruit notes make it a good complement to rich foods.

Suggested pairings include:

  • Rich Seafood: Smoked salmon or pan-seared scallops.

  • Dark Meats: Pair with roast venison or other game meats.

  • Desserts: The spicy and rich notes of the whisky pair excellently with gingerbread or dark chocolate mousse.
