In the heart of Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, The Bard Distillery stands as a testament to the enduring bond between family heritage and the art of American whiskey. Founded by Thomas and Kim Bard, the distillery is more than a commercial venture; it is a homecoming. Thomas is a direct descendant of William Bard, the surveyor who founded Bardstown, Kentucky, in 1780. While the family name has been synonymous with bourbon for centuries, this distillery marks the family's return to its roots on a hill overlooking the historic coal-mining town of Graham.
History and Restoration
The distillery is housed in the "bones" of a beautiful 1920s-era school building, which served as the community's centerpiece for decades. Thomas Bard himself attended school in this very building, as did generations of his family before him. After the local coal mines closed in the 1950s, the town lost much of its identity. By purchasing and painstakingly renovating the site in 2015, the Bards aimed to revitalize the area. Operations officially began in December 2019, transforming the historic schoolhouse into a world-class craft distillery and tourist destination on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

The distillery’s philosophy is captured by the word etched above its doors: Excelsior (Ever Upward). Originally meant to inspire students, it now serves as a guiding principle for the Bards to produce the highest quality spirits.
