Product description
Introduction
This premium red wine originates from New Zealand, specifically from the Marlborough region and the Southern Valleys subregion. Greywacke was established in 2009 by Kevin Judd, the founding winemaker of Cloudy Bay, as a family-owned project focused on a 'keep it simple and hands-on' ethos. The winery's philosophy centres on minimal-intervention winemaking and sustainable viticulture, often utilizing wild yeast fermentations to enhance texture and savoury complexity. The name itself pays homage to New Zealand’s prolific grey bedrock, found throughout the vineyard soils.
Wine Description
The 2023 Greywacke Pinot Noir is deeply coloured and highly aromatic. The nose is complex and perfumed, revealing scents of spiced blackcurrant, dark cherry, and bramble berries, layered with floral notes of violet and lilac alongside hints of hay, pumpernickel, and smoky oak. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and tactile, offering flavours of wild cherry, tamarillo, and grilled nectarine underpinned by a fine, linear acidity.
This 100% Pinot Noir is primarily sourced from hillside plantings in the Brancott and Omaka Valleys. Stylistically, it is celebrated for its finesse and 'seductive' texture, featuring polished, 'sinewy' tannins and a long, driven finish. It was matured in French oak barriques (approximately 30-40% new) for 11 to 12 months.
