Product description

Hwayo X. Premium (also known as Hwayo XP) is an ultra-premium single grain rice whisky produced by the Hwayo Distillery in Yeoju, South Korea. Launched to commemorate the brand's 10th anniversary, it represents a significant innovation in Korean spirits by bridging the gap between traditional soju and Western whisky. It is crafted from 100% premium Korean rice and bedrock water, distilled using a vacuum method at low temperatures to preserve the delicate floral esters of the grain. While Hwayo's standard sojus are aged in porous earthenware pots (onggi), the X. Premium undergoes a lengthy maturation in American oak barrels, making it Korea's first dedicated "rice whisky."

Spirit Description

This whisky presents a polished amber colour with a bright, clear clarity. The nose is complex and fragrant, offering a unique profile of vanilla, banana, and tinned peaches, balanced by unexpected notes of cucumber and a floral touch of lemongrass and mint. On the palate, it is exceptionally smooth and rounded with a buttery mouthfeel; flavours of desiccated coconut, caramel, and brown sugar lead into a mild, sweet rice core. The finish is long and elegant, characterized by lingering notes of blackcurrant, toasted oak, and a subtle, refreshing hint of green fruit. It is bottled at 41% ABV and is highly regarded for its lack of additives and "clean" character.

Food Pairing

Hwayo X. Premium is designed to be a sophisticated companion for a variety of high-end cuisines. It pairs naturally with Barbeque Beef (Bulgogi or Galbi), where its oaky sweetness complements the charred, savoury marinade. Its fruity and floral profile also makes it an excellent match for Fresh Seafood or Scallop Crudo. For a simpler pairing, it is best enjoyed neat alongside Aged Cheeses, Smoked Nuts, or an Apple Tart. Its smooth, clean finish also makes it one of the few whiskies that pairs effectively with Cuban Cigars, as the rice-based spirit provides a lighter, less astringent counterpoint to the smoke.
