Product description

Introduction

Laphroaig Elements 3.0 is a limited edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky from the country of Scotland, specifically the Islay region. The Laphroaig Distillery, established in 1815, is renowned worldwide for its distinctly smoky and medicinal Islay whisky. The 'Elements' series, of which this is the third release, focuses on exploring how adjustments to the whisky-making process impact the final flavour profile. This expression specifically explores the impact of a shorter fermentation period on the resulting spirit.

Spirit Description

Elements 3.0 is a cask-strength, non-chill filtered whisky made with a notably short fermentation period of only 55 hours. This is the standard length of fermentation for Laphroaig, and it is a key difference from other whiskies in the Elements series. The spirit was matured in a combination of refill quarter casks and first-fill bourbon barrels. The colour is described as a light gold. On the nose, it is intensely smoky, featuring aromas of soot, coal dust, sweet lemon oil, and new leather, alongside hints of sea spray and subtle sweetness. The palate is mouth-coating, sweet, and powerful, with flavours of sweet medicinal smoke, lemon zest, sweet cream, and sea salt. The shorter fermentation is believed to highlight the spirit's core, medicinal and peaty character. The finish is long and dry, with a lingering medicinal peat smoke and a sweet, smoky aftertaste. It is bottled at a cask strength of 54.3% ABV.

Accolades

As a limited-edition series, the Elements releases, including 3.0, are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate the distillery's transparent approach to production methods. This particular release is appreciated for its ability to showcase the distillery's classic, smoky profile in a pure, cask-strength format.

Food Pairing

The intense peat smoke, medicinal notes, and creamy sweetness of Laphroaig Elements 3.0 make it a robust pairing partner.

  • Savoury & Rich: It pairs exceptionally well with strong, pungent flavours like blue cheese or smoked salmon, as the peat smoke harmonises with the richness.

  • Meats: Consider pairing it with smoky barbecue, charcuterie, or roasted meats to complement the whisky's intensity.

  • Serving: Due to its high ABV, it is recommended to enjoy it neat or with a splash of water, which helps to temper the strength and open up the aromatic complexity.
