Product description
Introduction
Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Sauvignon - Shiraz 2022 is a red wine from Australia, produced in the South Australia region. Bin 389 is one of Penfolds' most sought-after red blend wines and is often referred to as 'Baby Grange'. First made in 1960 by the legendary Max Schubert, it helped forge Penfolds' reputation by combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz. The wine showcases the benefits of cross-varietal and multi-regional blending, epitomizing the Penfolds winemaking philosophy.
Wine Description
The wine has a glossy, dark red/purple colour. The aromatic profile is complex and evocative, opening with rich, deep tones of mahogany and the refined scent of a cigar box. It exhibits effusive aromas of cassis, liquorice, and blackberry, topped by a nice touch of graphite. The varietal composition is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Shiraz. It is a full-bodied and dense wine. The palate is enveloped by cocoa powder-like tannins, which are smooth yet profound. Flavours include plum fruits, blackberry, mulberry, wild cherries, and more distinctly tart morello cherries, supported by a mandatory 'sweet' core and succulent acidity. Stylistically, it is a classic, well-formed, and well-executed wine, demonstrating the essence of South Australian Cabernet and Shiraz. The wine is matured for 12 months in American oak hogsheads, with 36% new oak. The finish is long, with integrated tannins. The ABV is 14.5%. The optimal drinking window is long-term, from 2025 to 2050, or from 2028 through 2038+.
