The Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz originates from South Australia, specifically drawing fruit from the renowned subregions of McLaren Vale, Padthaway, and the Barossa Valley. Penfolds, established in 1844, is widely recognized as a pioneer of modern Australian fine wine and is led today by chief winemaker Peter Gago. This particular bottling, first created in 1960 by the legendary Max Schubert, is famously known as 'Baby Grange' because it is matured in the same American oak barrels that previously held the winery’s flagship Grange.
Wine Description
This deeply inky red blend presents a complex sensory profile starting with bright aromas of black cherry, blackcurrant, and bergamot, layered with nuances of shaved dark chocolate, licorice, and aniseed. The palate is elegantly full bodied, featuring a seamless integration of blue and red fruits—such as mulberry and red currant—balanced by savoury notes of black olive, fennel, and toasted spices. Composed of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Shiraz, the wine is supported by ultra-refined, chalky tannins and a touch of vanillin sweetness from its 12 months in American oak hogsheads.
