The Fortress of Tradition in Barolo: Experience the Uncompromising Gravity, Subterranean Longevity, and Sovereign Elegance of Langa’s Oldest Active Winery.
The Living History of Piedmont
Established in 1761 by Bartolomeo Borgogno, Giacomo Borgogno & Figli is the oldest continuously operating winery in Barolo. For over two and a half centuries, this historic estate has borne witness to—and actively shaped—the destiny of Italian wine. Borgogno’s wines were selected to toast the official unification of Italy at the celebratory banquet in 1861, and they were served to European royalty during historic state visits. Today, under the stewardship of the Farinetti family, who acquired the estate in 2008, Borgogno remains an unyielding fortress of traditional winemaking, safeguarding the historic style of the Langhe against fleeting modern trends.
The Power of Cru Terroir in Barolo
Borgogno’s absolute nobility is rooted in its estate vineyard holdings, which span roughly 39 hectares of the region's finest white marl and calcareous clay soils. The crown jewels of their portfolio are located in the commune of Barolo itself, featuring prime plots in three of the zone's most celebrated historic crus:
-
Cannubi: The most legendary hill in Barolo, famous for producing wines of transcendent aromatics, structural elegance, and silky, perfumed textures.
-
Liste: A historic south-facing cru unique to Borgogno, characterized by complex macroclimates and soils that impart immense power, dense tannins, and structural gravity.
-
Fossati: A high-altitude site that brings vibrant acidity, bright red-fruit energy, and severe herbaceous undercurrents to balance the estate blends.
The Uncompromising Traditionalist Method
While many producers in the late 20th century turned to small French barriques and short fermentations, Borgogno famously refused to budge. In the cellar, time has effectively stood still:
-
The Concrete Epoch: Fermentations take place in original, unlined concrete vats using spontaneous indigenous yeasts, often undergoing exceptionally long submerged-cap macerations lasting up to 50 days to extract deep structural identity.
-
The Slavonian Oak Sanctuary: The wines age for years exclusively in massive, neutral Slavonian oak casks (botti). This slow, gentle micro-oxygenation polishes the fierce tannins of the Nebbiolo grape without imparting any vanilla or wood spice aromatics.
The Heritage Collection: The Time Capsule of Barolo
A defining characteristic of Borgogno is their extraordinary library of historic vintages. The winery holds a subterranean treasure trove of perfectly preserved bottles dating back across the 20th century. Periodically, the estate officially re-releases these ultra-aged gems under the "Borgogno No Name" and "Borgogno Riserva Heritage" programs—disgorging and recorking them only after meticulous evaluation. It is an unparalleled opportunity for collectors to taste fully mature, pristine Barolo exactly as it was meant to be experienced.
Our Curated Borgogno Selection Our collection highlights the historic depth and modern precision of the estate:
-
Barolo Classico: The quintessential assembly of the house's top cru sites, offering a robust, structural profile of dried roses, tar, leather, and bright sour cherry.
-
Barolo Riserva: Crafted only in exceptional years, spending up to five full years in large oak casks to achieve an ethereal, balsamic complexity.
-
The Single Cru Bottlings: Highly allocated expressions of Cannubi and Liste, allowing connoisseurs to taste the raw, unblended impact of soil differentiation.
-
Langhe Nebbiolo & Barbera d'Alba: Energetic, approachable everyday expressions of the Piedmontese classics, vinified with the same traditional respect as the flagship Barolos.
The Sovereign Gastronomic Match
Borgogno’s structured tannins, elevated volatile aromatics, and driving acidity make them built specifically for rich, earthy Northern Italian cuisine. A bottle of Borgogno Barolo is the ultimate companion to slow-simmered beef tagliata, hand-cut tajarin pasta tossed in local butter and shaved white truffles, wild boar stews, or a wedge of well-aged Castelmagno cheese.
