Tequila, as we know it, has been around for hundreds of years. Lately, it’s become more popular than ever, with every restaurant and bar offering new cocktails made from the distilled juice of the blue agave plant and the infamous tequila shots.

It’s essential to understand what tequila is exactly. First of all, it’s important to note that there are two types of spirits, 100% blue agave and mixto tequilas. 100% blue agave tequila is only grown in Mexico, while mixto, on the other hand, just needs to have 51% blue agave. The rest can be sweeteners and herbs to add a signature to it. On top of that, it can be made pretty much anywhere in the world!

Reposado means “rested” in Spanish. This kind of tequila can rest from two months to a year before it’s bottled. Reposado usually takes on the gold hue from the barrels they’ve been aged in, which are either oak or white oak barrels. The flavour of tequila will significantly depend on the type of barrel it’s aged in.

Reposado will do really well in a Margarita, but it’s best with heavier cocktails due to the oak and vanilla flavour that it adds due to its time spent in barrels.
