Product description
Force Majeure is the flagship New England IPA from Calgary’s Annex Ale Project, widely regarded as one of the defining beers of the Alberta craft scene. Crafted as an uncompromised showcase of modern hop saturation, the name a legal term describing an unpredictable, unavoidable event nods to the sheer, unstoppable burst of hop flavor packed into every can. Annex built its reputation on technical precision and bold flavor profiles, and Force Majeure stands as their gold standard for the NEIPA / Hazy IPA style: thick, juicy, and intensely aromatic without relying on harsh bitterness.
Beer Description
Force Majeure pours a thick, luminous, opaque pastel-yellow with a dense, persistent white foam head that leaves heavy rings of lace as it drops.
Aroma: The nose is an immediate, room-filling explosion of ripe tropical fruit. It leads with dominant notes of sweet mango, passion fruit, and fleshy papaya, complemented by bright top notes of tangerine peel and pink grapefruit. Beneath the fruit, there is a distinct, soft graininess reminiscent of sweet flaked oats.
Palate: On the tongue, it is medium-to-full bodied with a strikingly silky, "pillowy" texture. It opens with a wave of lush tropical stone fruit, candied orange, and guava, flowing into a soft, velvety mid-palate. Bitterness is kept extremely low and rounded, finishing clean, smooth, and fruit-forward with zero hop burn.
Profile: It sits at a substantial 6.9% ABV with a low, restrained IBUs profile that prioritizes hop flavor and aroma saturation over tongue-scraping bitterness.
Technical Notes:The signature heavy haze and luxurious body stem from a grain bill loaded with flaked oats and malted wheat alongside standard pale malt. Annex utilizes a aggressive double dry-hopping (DDH) regimen centered on oil-rich Pacific Northwest hops, predominantly Citra and Mosaic. By timing dry-hop additions during active fermentation, the brewery takes advantage of yeast biotransformation unlocking deep, complex ester-hop synergies while keeping bitter resins out of the final liquid.
