Product description
This structured and 'historic' red wine originates from Italy, within the Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G. appellation of southern Tuscany. Sourced from the Pian delle Vigne estate, located six kilometers southwest of Montalcino, the property spans 460 total acres with 160 acres dedicated to southwest-facing vineyard plots. Acquired by the Marchesi Antinori family in 1995, the estate draws its name from a characteristic 19th-century railway station situated on the grounds. The winery operates under a traditional philosophy focused on using large oak casks, which elegantly shields the absolute purity of the fruit while maximizing the aging potential of the land.
Wine Description
The 2009 Antinori Brunello di Montalcino 'Pian delle Vigne' presents a deep ruby red colour accented by brilliant garnet highlights. Its sensory profile is rich and exotic, unfolding an expressive bouquet of intense violets, plums, and blackberries layered with complex notes of saddle leather, underbrush, balsam herbs, licorice, and tobacco leaf. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and velvety, showcasing an ample, fruit-forward core of bold red cherries, spice, and dried ginger. It is characterized by its soft, silky tannins, well-integrated oak, and a vibrant backbone of mineral acidity that drives into an exceptionally long, persistent finish defined by hints of espresso, cocoa powder, and candied orange peel.
This 100% Sangiovese wine reached an alcohol content (ABV) of 14.0%. The harvested grapes were completely destemmed and gently crushed before undergoing alcoholic fermentation and maceration on the skins in stainless steel vats for approximately 12 days at a controlled temperature of 28°C. Following the completion of malolactic fermentation, the wine was transferred into traditional large oak barrels ranging in capacity from 30 hL to 80 hL, where it aged for over two years before being bottled in January 2013. While the estate champions natural biodiversity and sustainable agricultural management across its plains, this bottling is not certified organic.
