Product description
This structured and 'aristocratic' red wine originates from Italy, within the esteemed Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G. appellation of southern Tuscany. Produced by the historic Marchesi Antinori family winemakers since 1385 across 26 generations the Pian delle Vigne estate was acquired in 1995 and takes its name from a characteristic 19th-century railway station still standing on the property. Located six kilometers southwest of the historic town of Montalcino, the 184-hectare estate features approximately 65 hectares of vineyards exposed to the southwest at an elevation of 130 meters above sea level. The vines are rooted in clay-limestone soils rich in fine gravel (scheletro) and calcareous silt. The warm, sun-drenched microclimate of Montalcino's southwestern sector is moderated by gentle maritime breezes off the Tyrrhenian Sea, allowing Sangiovese Grosso (Brunello) to achieve complete phenolic skin maturity while retaining a vibrant, age-worthy natural acidity and an elegant structural frame.
Wine Description
The 2020 Antinori Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino presents a luminous, deep ruby-garnet color in the glass with subtle brick and terracotta reflections along the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally fresh, high-toned, and complex, delivering an expansive, precise, and energetic portrayal of southwestern Montalcino Sangiovese. The bouquet opens with a soaring, multi-layered display of dried black cherries, ripe plums, and candied blood orange peel, seamlessly layered with complex underlays of balsamic sage, wild violet, eucalyptus, tomato leaf, cocoa nibs, and a distinct trace of cast iron minerality. On the palate, the wine is medium-to-full-bodied, spry, and precisely focused, showcasing a succulent core of red berry compote, tart raspberries, and candied citrus peel. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, mouthwatering backbone of natural acidity that effortlessly lifts its mid-palate fruit density. The mouthfeel is broad, velvety, and supple, framed by fine-grained, chalky tannins that glide into an extraordinarily long, dry, and savory finish accented by lingering notes of licorice, spice, and crushed stone.
