Product description

Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino originates from Italy, within the Tuscany region and the historic Brunello di Montalcino DOCG appellation. Acquired by the Marchesi Antinori family in 1995, the property takes its name from a historic 19th-century railway station located on the grounds. Situated six kilometers south of the town of Montalcino, the estate spans 184 hectares, with roughly 65 hectares dedicated to vineyards situated on south-facing, clay-limestone soils rich in small stones (scheletro). Antinori’s operational philosophy at Pian delle Vigne centers on interpreting traditional Sangiovese character through a modern lens of supple elegance, utilizing large, neutral oak casks to emphasize purity of fruit, vibrant freshness, and polished, accessible tannins.

Wine Description

This red wine displays a deep, brilliant ruby-garnet appearance in the glass, with soft terracotta highlights developing near the rim as it ages. It possesses a full-bodied, supple, and well-balanced structure defined by a smooth, velvety, and mouth-coating texture. The sensory profile is highly expressive, complex, and harmonious, opening with an inviting nose of ripe red cherries, wild raspberries, and red plums, layered over nuances of dried roses, violet flowers, tobacco leaf, cocoa, sweet spice, and a touch of balsamic eucalyptus. On the palate, it delivers a generous core of juicy red fruits held together by fine-grained, polished tannins and a vibrant thread of natural acidity. The finish is remarkably long, clean, and persistent, leaving lingering echoes of licorice, savory herbs, and toasted oak.

  • Varietal Composition: 100% Sangiovese (locally known as Brunello).

  • Stylistic Notes: The grapes are carefully harvested and destemmed before undergoing temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks. To preserve Sangiovese's delicate fruit purity and avoid harsh extraction, the wine is aged for approximately 2 years in large oak casks (botti ranging from 30 to 80 hectoliters) rather than small barriques, followed by an extended period of bottle maturation before release.

  • ABV: Typically 14.0% to 14.5%.
