Product description
This unpeated single malt Scotch whisky originates from Scotland, produced in Dufftown within the Speyside region. Crafted at The Balvenie Distillery under the direction of long-serving Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE (and Kelsey McKechnie), this release marks the first time in the distillery's 130-year history that French oak barrels were integrated into their core lineup. After spending 16 years maturing in traditional American oak ex-bourbon casks, the whisky underwent a secondary finishing period in rare French oak barrels that previously held Pineau des Charentes—a fortified aperitivo wine from Charentes, France, made by blending unfermented grape juice with Cognac eau-de-vie. Bottled at a signature strength of 95.2 proof (47.6% ABV), it delivers a bright, vinous, and floral variation on Balvenie’s classic honeyed profile.
Spirit Description
This single malt displays a bright golden amber color with warm honeyed reflections in the glass. On the nose, it is floral, sweet, and lively, opening with initial aromas of lotus blossom, geranium, and fresh green apple, quickly yielding to sweet honey, glazed grapefruit zest, and delicate vanilla sponge cake. On the palate, it feels light, silky, and elegant, delivering a sweet arrival of candied lemon peel, poached pear, and honeysuckle. As it warms, the French oak influence brings forward a gentle spice prickle—white pepper, ginger, and subtle wood tannins—harmonized by the grape-forward, sweet-wine notes of the Pineau finish. The finish is clean, medium-to-long, and refreshing, leaving trailing impressions of dried citrus zest, soft oak spice, sweet malty barley, and a lingering floral dryness. The 47.6% ABV proof gives the delicate fruit and floral layers excellent structure without overpowering the palate.
Accolades
The Balvenie 16 Year Old French Oak Pineau Cask Finish has earned high praise across spirit competitions and whisky review outlets since joining the core lineup. Securing a Gold Medal at the International Spirits Challenge alongside 90+ point ratings from Distiller and Whisky Advocate, critics frequently applaud the bottling for its innovative cask selection. Reviewers highlight how the French oak Pineau casks inject a crisp, citrusy, and floral brightness into Balvenie’s rich, honey-dominated DNA, offering a distinctly different wood-finish narrative compared to their classic Caribbean Cask (Rum) or PortWood releases.
