Product description
This structured fortified wine originates from Portugal, within the prestigious Madeira D.O.P. appellation on the volcanic island of Madeira in the North Atlantic. Produced by Blandy’s an iconic founding family of the Madeira Wine Company with a winemaking lineage dating back to 1811 this single-harvest Colheita / Frasqueira expression represents a benchmark for long-aged, highly complex fortified wines. Sourced exclusively from low-yielding Malmsey (Malvasia) vines cultivated on steep, terraced volcanic hillside plots (vinhas de enforcado) along the sun-drenched southern coast of the island (predominantly around Calheta and Campanário), the vines thrive in basaltic, iron-rich, and highly acidic volcanic soils. The subtropical maritime microclimate features constant Atlantic breezes and high humidity, allowing Malmsey grapes to achieve exceptionally high natural sugar levels while retaining a razor-sharp, age-worthy natural acidity.
Wine Description
The 1991 Blandy’s Malmsey presents a rich, deep mahogany-amber color in the glass with bright topaz, burnished copper, and greenish-gold reflections along the rim. Its sensory profile is exceptionally bold, high-toned, and complex, delivering an expansive, precise, and opulent portrait of aged volcanic terroir. The bouquet opens with a soaring display of dried figs, Medjool dates, dark raisins, and orange marmalade, seamlessly layered with complex underlays of roasted walnuts, toasted pecans, pipe tobacco, dark molasses, dark cocoa, beeswax, and a distinct line of volatilized citrus peel and singe-wood spice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich, and unctuous, showcasing a succulent core of caramelized sugar, dark honey, and brandied fruits. It is characterized by its outstanding inner energy and an incisive, mouthwatering backbone of vibrant natural acidity that cuts cleanly through its inherent sweetness, preventing any sense of heaviness. The mouthfeel is broad, velvety, and mouth-coating, gliding into an extraordinarily long, dry-skewing, and mineral-driven finish accented by persistent notes of salted caramel, toasted oak, espresso, and dried citrus zest.
This high-definition Madeira expression is 100% Malmsey (Malvasia), hand-harvested meticulously on steep slopes. Following gentle pressing, the juice underwent partial fermentation on the skins in stainless steel vats before being fortified with neutral grape spirit (96% ABV) to arrest fermentation and preserve the grape's natural rich sugars. The wine was then matured using the traditional, slow Canteiro method, aging for decades in seasoned American oak casks placed in the warm upper floors of Blandy’s historic lodges in Funchal. This gentle, passive heating and oxidation over 20+ years concentrated its flavors and structural acidity into an virtually indestructible, timeless nectar. It reaches a generous alcohol content (ABV) of 19.0% to 20.0% and is finished in a classic rich (sweet) style, flawlessly balanced by extreme natural acidity.
Vintage Quality
The 1991 harvest on Madeira produced exceptionally balanced Malmsey grapes with outstanding sugar concentration and vibrant acidity. Blandy’s patient, decades-long Canteiro oak maturation allowed the 1991 vintage to achieve breathtaking tertiary complexity, balance, and concentration. The 1991 Blandy’s Malmsey stands at a magnificent peak of maturity today, offering an indestructible, high-energy drinking experience that will hold effortlessly in bottle for decades to come.
