Product description
Ichorous Imperial Stout is an unapologetically massive, high-gravity offering from Lacombe, Alberta’s renowned Blindman Brewing. Named after ichor the ethereal fluid said to flow in the veins of Greek gods this beer lives up to its mythical moniker with sheer weight, viscosity, and depth. Blindman, celebrated for their scientific precision, barrel-aging prowess, and commitment to local prairie grains, built Ichorous to showcase the absolute upper limits of roasted malt complexity without relying on pasty dessert-sweet adjuncts. It stands as an authentic, powerhouse Russian Imperial Stout that balances rich malt decadence with structured bitterness.
Beer Description
Ichorous pours an opaque, midnight black (SRM 46) into the glass with motor-oil thickness, producing a dense, velvety, mocha-brown head that settles slowly into a thick collar and leaves sticky curtains of lacing.
Aroma: The nose is intense, complex, and intoxicatingly dark. It leads with prominent waves of dark roast espresso beans, baker’s bittersweet chocolate, and black strap molasses, layered over deeper accents of charred oak, dried figs, dark raisins, and subtle warming alcohol fumes.
Palate: On the tongue, it is exceptionally full-bodied with a dense, chewy, and coating mouthfeel balanced by fine, soft carbonation. The initial sip delivers an avalanche of fudge, cacao nibs, and toasted rye bread, quickly met by a sturdy mid-palate of black licorice, dark fruit, and roasty ash. The massive malt base is checked by an assertive, resinous hop bite and roasted malt bitterness, finishing with a pleasant, lingering warmth and a semi-dry, dark chocolate finish.
Profile: It packs a heavyweight 11.0% ABV and a robust bitterness of 80 IBU (Original Gravity: 1.110, Final Gravity: 1.024), creating a classic, assertive imperial stout profile where high residual sweetness is kept in check by substantial bitterness.
Technical Notes: Blindman crafts Ichorous from an enormous grist of Alberta two-row pale malt paired with an array of specialty roasted grains, including roasted barley, chocolate malt, and dark crystal malts. Fermented thoroughly to reach its 11% threshold, it receives a heavy charge of kettle hops to reach 80 IBU, providing the necessary backbone to prevent a brew with a 1.110 starting gravity from turning cloying. It also serves as the prime canvas for Blindman’s coveted barrel-aged reserve programs.
