Product description

odegas Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva 2016 originates from Spain, within the Ebro Valley region and the prestigious Rioja Alta subregion. The estate was founded in 1932 by Isaac Muga and Martinez, establishing a deeply respected multi-generational legacy in Haro's Station District. The winery's philosophy focuses on preserving traditional Riojan craftsmanship, being one of the few houses to employ an in-house cooperage and maintaining a strict commitment to fermenting and aging entirely in oak vats and casks.

Wine Description

This red wine presents an attractive black-cherry appearance with a medium-to-deep density and possesses a medium-to-full body with a flawlessly balanced, vertical structure. The sensory profile is highly elegant, layered, and classic, opening with an architectural nose of forest fruits and dark plums, seamlessly intertwined with notes of violets, walnuts, leather, clove, cinnamon, and smoky tobacco. On the juicy, silky-smooth palate, it delivers deep flavours of black cherry, blackberry, liquorice, and cassis, beautifully supported by a line of fresh, well-integrated acidity and a crunchy mineral undertone. The finish is exceptionally long, precise, and pointed, leaving trailing memories of creamy vanilla, cocoa powder, lavender, and sweet wood spices wrapped in fine-grained, velvety tannins.

  • Varietal Composition: A traditional Rioja blend consisting of 80% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo, 5% Graciano, and 5% Grenache.

  • Stylistic Notes: The wine is celebrated for its incredible structural focus and seamless integration. The grapes are always the last to be picked during harvest and are sourced from high-altitude plots. The wine undergoes a minimum of 36 months of aging in French and American oak casks, followed by a light fining with fresh egg whites and an additional 36 months of bottle refinement before release.

  • ABV: 14.5%.

  • Organic Status: While the estate operates with a dedicated focus on environmental sustainability and became one of the first wineries in the region to earn specific environmental certifications, this commercial bottling is not certified organic.

Food Pairing

The vibrant acidity, broad mid-palate, and building tannic architecture of this Gran Reserva make it a magnificent companion for savory, rich, and slowly cooked culinary creations.

  • Meats: Pairs beautifully with a roasted rack of lamb, grilled beef tenderloin, pork loin, or traditional beef stews.

  • Hearty Fare: Suggested pairings include rich winter casseroles, traditional meat pies, or roasted game bird selections.

  • Cheese: Matches gracefully with structured artisanal platters of mature, hard cheeses such as a sharp white Cheddar.

Vintage Quality

The 2016 vintage in Rioja is regarded as an exceptional and legendary year, yielding a large harvest characterized by phenomenal volume and elite fruit purity. The growing season endured a challenging start, beginning with a mild winter and an intensely wet spring that delayed both budburst and subsequent flowering phases. However, a radiant, hot summer allowed the grapes to catch up and achieve optimal phenolic maturity, while cool evening temperatures preserved the mouthwatering natural acidity. The winemaking team's skill in executing a meticulous double fruit selection across their cooler, late-ripening plots successfully turned these climatic challenges into a brilliant triumph, resulting in a monumental Prado Enea release with an extraordinary capacity to evolve gracefully in the cellar through 2046.
