The Bouchard Père & Fils Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru (Domaine) 2022 is one of the most prestigious white wines in Burgundy. Bouchard is the largest landowner in the legendary Chevalier-Montrachet vineyard, possessing 2.33 hectares that span all four terraces of the slope. The 2022 vintage is noted for being unusually textural and muscular, successfully translating a warm growing season into a wine of immense power and precision.
Wine Description
The 2022 expression is described as a "tour de force," balancing the solar ripeness of the vintage with the cooling mineral influence of the upper-slope limestone soils.
Varietal Composition: 100% Chardonnay from organically grown estate vines.
Aromatic Profile: The nose is explosive and complex, featuring "Amalfi lemon," pineapple, and yellow orchard fruits (pear, apricot). These are layered with wildflowers, fresh hazelnuts, and the signature "gunflint" and wet stone minerality of Chevalier.
Palate and Body: It is a medium- to full-bodied wine with a rich, unctuous, and layered texture. It offers intense concentration, with flavors of citrus confit, honeysuckle, and orange rind.
Structure: Despite its richness, the wine maintains incredible tension and a line of vibrant acidity. The finish is described as "extravagantly long" and linear, with a saline, stony grip that persists.
Winemaking and Aging: The grapes were hand-harvested and fermented in French oak. The wine was aged for 12 to 13 months in barrels (using approximately 15% new oak) to provide structural support without masking the delicate floral and mineral nuances.
ABV: 13.5%.
Optimal Drinking Window: This is a monumental white Burgundy built for decades. It is recommended to begin drinking around 2027–2030, with the potential to cellar through 2050–2070.
